Assignment 3
For our third and final assignment, it was time to take on something more challenging. We had to choose a client and decipher how that client feels and expresses the five main emotions: joy, sadness, anger, fear and disgust. Then, we had to create a poetic space that tells the message without any literal symbolism (e.g. creating a room, building, physical object etc.).
Planning
First, we had to create 3 bubble diagrams.

The first analyses the client's behaviours and actions when feeling the emotions.
In the second, we had to think about what these emotions would look like if they became a space. What does an emotion feel like, and how would you describe such a feeling with a space? We searched for some pictures online to act as inspiration.
The last mindmap has us describing a path and concept. What order do the emotions go in in the model? For me, I decided to start with anger and end with joy. My overarching concept was the journey of accepting that anger is a normal emotion in order to control it and overcome negativity.

Mockup 1
As always, I started off by sketching out some ideas I had. However, after testing, experimenting and considering materials, I changed some ideas, particularly disgust and fear.
The final result of mockup 1 is simple yet establishes good ideas. With that, I move on.

Mockup 2

The form I used for disgust in mockup 1 was too organic, and we were not allowed to use organic shapes. As such, I changed it. It became a maze of loops instead, to symbolise queasiness.
In mockup 2, I also wanted to experiment more with the spacing of each section. It was too regular in mockup 1, and the transitions between emotions were lacking as well. It was all too direct.

So for mockup 2, I made my little cave of anger be suspended on a platform. Once you make it out, you will 'fall' into a pit of disgust. Additionally, I rearranged the pillars of sadness to create a path, similar to a garden wall leading into a garden. This created an even smoother transition between sadness and joy.
Final model
In the final model, I made some small changes as well. I adjusted the fear tunnel to tilt at a small angle and adjusted the sadness pillars to not only create a path but fill in the new empty space now at the side. I did this to further vary the sections and to help increase the movement in the model.

Other than that, everything was completed smoothly.

Just like the last assignment, we were required to make presentation boards. This time, we had to make 2.

Here are some drawings I did for the PDF compilation we were also required to do.

Reflection
I love experimenting with emotions. They're an integral part of life. I based the concept off a song I like but also personal experience and my own continuous journey of remembering that anger is normal, but also knowing it should be controlled. I enjoyed this assignment despite the workload. I think with this assignment, I showcased TGC 1: discipline specific knowledge.
